Aims and Focus

Our school’s main aim and focus is to offer a competitive alternative to special education in the Northern Rivers and to provide the best educational experience and schooling life as possible with an open door policy for parents, families, carers and friends to feel as welcome as possible. It is important that good communication is prevalent between all members of the school community to ensure the students are at the forefront of every decision.

The school has been functioning in this manner since its foundation and we thrive to maintain the positive reputation we have fostered in the local community. We aim to further develop professional learning for staff in the use of up to date technologies and educational pedagogy. Continuing with this approach will ensure our school remains a Centre of Excellence.

Our Mission

Biala Special School recognises and respects the uniqueness of each child. Established in 1969, the school’s primary mission is to provide a safe and positive learning environment for children with a disability.

Our curriculum skilfully weaves academic knowledge, community access and life skills into everyday learning activities. Students are encouraged to
follow their curiosity and given the opportunity to pursue their own interests. They learn to work both independently and cooperatively with others.

At Biala Special School we empower students with complex learning disabilities to recognise and optimise their full potential. We celebrate diversity and strive to instil respect, independence and self confidence in every one of our students. We give each child support and encouragement to become his or her own unique self.
